Some 3,500 students in elementary and secondary schools from both public and private joined the 1st Chess Summit of Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) at CSI Stadia, Dagupan City on June 30.
Mayor Belen T. Fernandez was the over-all chairman of the 70th Agew na Dagupan culminating activity with former Schools Division Superintendent Froserfina J. Bravo as executive chairperson. International Chess Grandmaster Eugene Torre was the guest of honor and speaker of the event.
The one-day summit included activities like chess clinic for beginners, a mini-blitz tournament, and a simultaneously chess play with Torre. Torre shared his strategies and techniques to the kids, also on how to further their knowledge and enhance their skills on chess.
Mayor Fernandez said she will allocate additional P1 million in the city’s sports program exclusively for the chess program. DCSC commissioner Finnela Sim declared that the chess summit was the first-of-its kind in Region 1.
Mayor Fernandez stated: “I suggest that instead of playing computer games, children must be encouraged to play chess to improve their concentration and help them focus on their studies. This is why we will be allocating an additional P1 million for our sports program to train and purchase all the necessary equipment in the training of the children in playing chess.”
Former Schools Supt. Froserfina J. Bravo, the executive chairperson of 70th Agew na Dagupan, expressed her gratitude of the huge attendance and said: “Today, we are really making history as we hold our last activity in line with the platinum year celebration of the Agew na Dagupan.”
