Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones together with Undersecretary Dina Ocampo signed an agreement with Korean Ambassador Kim Jae Shin on June 21, allowing public high schools to teach Korean language or Hangeul and for Korean language to be part of Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL).
A lot of students are excited about introducing Hangeul in the country since Korea has a big impact for Filipinos because of its people, culture and music. According to DepEd, the SPFL program will help the students to be locally and internationally competitive.
Sec. Briones said: “We are very happy that finally, we are having this signing of the MOA. This is not a beginning. This is a continuation of very long years of fruitful relationship, including the field of education, between Korea and the Republic of the Philippines.”
The SPFL program will also offer other foreign languages like German, Nihonggo (Japanese), Mandarin (Chinese) and French.
