Bertha, a female hippopotamus and considered as the oldest of its kind in the world died last July 7 in Manila Zoo due to health deterioration of the hippo for the past few weeks.
Usually, hippopotamus live up to 40-50 years only but in Bertha’s case, she lived longer than expected with the age of 65 and the country already had her since year 1959. Bertha was found dead in her enclosure in the zoo. After Bertha, one that follows her age is Mali, a 43-year old female Asian elephant.
According to People magazine, the People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) spokesman Jason Bakers said: “Bertha’s life at the Manila Zoo was one full of boredom, misery and deprivation. It’s a tragedy that she only realized freedom through death.”
